Artist Interview: Philemon Campbell

Q: When did you first realize you were an artist?

When did I first realize that I was an artist! Ah that’s a tricky question because in primary school when I used to do my science projects I would draw the human skeleton, the body parts, the plants and all the other elements that these diagrams involved and I didn’t consider myself an artist. I thought I was just able to draw well and I would help the other students with their drawings. I wasn’t just focused on drawing I was involved in all my school’s subjects. It was not until many years later around 1983 I was fascinated by some artists on the road side in the busy capital of Jamaica, Kingston, It was then I realized I wanted to try my hand at painting. Not knowing what to do I went to the art store and purchased two canvases, some paints and brushes. I painted two landscapes and to my surprise I sold my first two paintings. And as they say the rest is history.

Q: Could you tell us some more about your paintings?

My paintings here, are almost a representation of the Jamaican motto “out of many one people’’. These paintings depict cultures of different nationalities yet they can all relate to each other since the Region in which I grew up is a multicultural mosaic. I used different techniques to achieve different results for each painting.

Q: Do your paintings tell stories or are they simply decorative elements.

I do like to tell stories with my art, some are simple and some are complex. When I choose a canvas I deliberately do that because of the subject matter. A blank canvas is like the foundation of a house then I have to build on it. I see the finished work before I even start painting. On a finished canvas there could be a great story but in the eyes of the beholder it’s just a beautiful painting.

Q: What inspires you to paint and how do you keep motivated.

My inspiration comes from the many diverse cultures that I grew up with. Life itself inspires me. When you look around your surroundings there is so much harmony and serenity and when you absorb these elements it can be overwhelming. The way to express yourself is on the surface of your canvas. I also get great inspiration from other artists. I keep myself motivated by enjoying what I do and by the appreciation from my family, friends and other people who are touched by my art.

Q: How have you handled the business side of being an artist?

The business of being an artist! Oh…that’s a long story; but in a nut shell I know that there are many ways one can achieve success. The possibilities are endless. Marketing art is dependent on how the work is presented and promoted. It is of paramount importance for me that the business side of my art does not impede my growth as an artist or prevent me from focusing on painting.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

As an artist I truly believe that there is always a continuous accomplishment to be achieved. Being self-taught I always like to have a positive vision as I move along with my God given talent. There will be obstacles along the way but is for me to overcome them and progress. If I have to change course at any given time, I will recognize and respond to the signals.

Q: What's the best and worst parts of being a full time, working artist?

The best part of being a full time working artist, is to be able to immerse myself in expressing my emotions and experiences. The worst part is making sure that I can earn an income to support my needs.

Q: What other interests do you have outside of painting?

I am a trained graphic designer with extensive experience and I still do freelance work in that field. For the past 18 years I have been an active member of a well known performing folk group. I have a passion for nature and for travelling to far-flung regions of the globe.

Q: What advice would you give to an artist just starting out?

First and foremost you have to love what you do. Becoming an artist requires a lifetime of development and with that comes struggle and victories because you are learning new things all the time. I would encourage you to always seek new ideas and follow your own intuitions. You are the captain of the ship, you are the master of your canvas. Only time will tell. Don’t quit.
